The Mother Lode Friens of Music, a regional organization of classical music performance based in the central foothills are of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Northern California, invited Spanish guitarrist Jaume Torrent to present two concerts in recent weeks. Mr. Torrent performed brilliantly on both ocassion, in a wide range of repertoire and in different ensembles.
Mr. Torrent has an astonishing degree of control over his instrument. He has perfected a mode of playing that permits him an usual projection and dynamic range. As a pianist, I performed with him the Fantasia of Hans Haug. For the first, even on a 7-foot Yamaha piano, I was able to treat a guitarist colleague in the same way I accompany a violinist or cellist. Mr. Torrent also performed, in a large concert hall setting, the Grande Serenade Opus 63 of Hummel, with piano, violin, clarinet and basson. None of the players had to make any adjustments for Mr. Torrent's benefit and he was in every respect an equal partner.
Mr. Torrent's exceptional technique, control, musicianship and familiarity with all segments of the guitar repertoire render him a musician of the highest caliber.
